Belmond began as Orient-Express Hotels, the company James Sherwood built around restoring singular grand hotels and the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express train — heritage as the product, not a marketing overlay. The Belmond name arrived in 2014; LVMH acquired the group in 2018–19 and has kept the portfolio deliberately non-uniform: a 1923 Belle Époque palace on Copacabana, a 1958 Cipriani villa on Giudecca, a 15th-century Oxfordshire manor that exists because Raymond Blanc's restaurant needed a house, a clifftop Edwardian pile above Funchal. Room counts stay relatively low; dining programmes run deep — Michelin rooms at Cipriani, Copacabana Palace, Le Manoir and Reid's Palace are destination restaurants, not captive amenities. Where Four Seasons sells consistency and Aman sells scarcity, Belmond sells the specific building and the story attached to it. The trains and riverboats remain part of the same idea: travel as a sequence of unrepeatable rooms rather than a branded template.
