Fairmont's First Thai Hotel Skipped the River Every Rival Chose

Fairmont opened its first hotel in Thailand last month, and it is nowhere near the water. Fairmont Bangkok Sukhumvit sits on the commercial spine of Bangkok with 416 rooms and 58 suites, several floors from the Chao Phraya riverbank that has defined the city's luxury market since the 19th century.

That riverbank is where the benchmarks are. Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok has been trading on the same stretch since 1876, joined over time by The Peninsula Bangkok and Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River. The river offers views and arrival theater, but it also means a boat transfer or a long drive to the business districts where most guests actually spend their days.

Newer luxury entrants keep choosing land instead. Aman Nai Lert Bangkok opened in a garden estate off Wireless Road, Rosewood Bangkok and The St. Regis Bangkok sit inland, and Fairmont has now planted itself among the office towers, malls and Skytrain stations of Sukhumvit.

What is inside

Top-tier suites come with a private gym, bar and treatment room. Drinking and dining runs through Caya Pool Club for Thai street food and sundowners, the more formal Aela Social Bar, and Wiggle Room, a supper club pairing cabaret performance with a tasting menu. A rooftop restaurant and a contemporary Thai venue are both due in December. Guests booking Fairmont Gold rooms get a separate reception, lounge and concierge.

Rates open around $347 a night, which undercuts the river palaces by a wide margin and tells you exactly which traveler Fairmont is chasing: the one who wants a luxury flag and a short commute.
