Hotel Bel-Air Picks Its Next Leader From a Famous London Address

Hotel Bel-Air has named Richard Cooke its next general manager, starting January 1, 2027. The appointment brings a Brown’s Hotel veteran back to California.

Hotel Bel-Air has appointed Richard Cooke as general manager from January 1, 2027, bringing in the executive who led London’s Brown’s Hotel. Dorchester Collection announced the move on October 15, setting up a new year change at one of Los Angeles’ most secluded luxury hotels.

Who is taking over the hotel?

Cooke arrives from Rocco Forte Hotels, where he was managing director for the UK and Northern Europe. Alongside Brown’s, his responsibilities covered the group’s hotels in the UK, Belgium and Germany. His career includes more than 15 years in senior positions with Shangri-La and earlier food and beverage roles with several luxury hotel companies.

In the announcement, Cooke describes the move as a return to California and says the US is where his family calls home. Dorchester Collection chief executive Philippe Leboeuf points to his approach to hospitality and experience across different markets as reasons for the appointment.

For guests, this is a leadership announcement rather than a new opening or a renovation notice. It provides no basis to expect a January closure, a replacement dining concept or a redesigned suite collection. Those are separate decisions that have not been announced here.

What kind of stay will he inherit?

The appeal of Hotel Bel-Air is unusually tied to its setting. The hotel occupies 12 acres of gardens in Los Angeles, with 103 rooms and suites. Its mission-style buildings and winding paths offer a different rhythm from a large urban tower, even though Beverly Hills and Century City are nearby.

The property became part of Dorchester Collection in 2008. A subsequent two-year renovation updated the accommodation and public spaces, with Alexandra Champalimaud and Rockwell Group involved in the work. The hotel traces its opening to August 1946, so its identity long predates its current operator.

What should matter when booking a 2027 visit?

Choose it for the garden setting and the facilities available for the particular stay. The current offering includes a spa, fitness studio, outdoor pool and several places to eat or have a drink. Guests planning a retreat should confirm treatment appointments and their preferred room’s outdoor space directly, rather than assume every room provides the same experience.

The new general manager begins on a specific date, but the effect of a leadership change emerges over time. Returning guests will have a more useful measure than the appointment itself: how well the team looks after the quiet routines and personal preferences that brought them back.
