Kempinski Augustine Prague Plans a New Chapter Inside a Living Monastery
Kempinski plans an early 2027 relaunch for Augustine in Prague, pairing a working monastery with new social spaces. Here is what guests should expect.
Kempinski plans to relaunch Augustine Hotel in Prague in early 2027, bringing a redesigned hotel into the still-active Augustinian Monastery of St. Thomas. The October announcement puts a new timetable on the transformation of seven historic buildings in Malá Strana, where the appeal is a stay beside a living religious community rather than simply a room in a preserved monument.
What changes for a stay in Prague?
The project has 101 rooms, including 20 suites. Many retain vaulted ceilings and wooden beams associated with the monastery's former living quarters. LDS Design Studio is combining those features with interiors drawing on Gothic, Baroque and Bohemian influences, including colours inspired by the city's rooftops and gardens.
Public spaces are receiving particular attention. A residential-style bar and smaller gathering areas are intended to bring residents and travellers together. Displays of Czech craftsmanship and a ceiling artwork commissioned with a local artist give guests something specific to seek out beyond the reception desk.
Why does the opening date need attention?
Kempinski's April acquisition announcement originally put the reflagging in late 2026. It also explained that Augustine would operate under its own name during the transition, with investment in guestrooms and public areas. The newer early 2027 target is therefore the relevant planning window for travellers seeking the completed Kempinski experience.
The purchase itself was unusual for the group: Kempinski took ownership, making this its first acquisition since its 1970 investment in Munich's Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. That gives the company direct responsibility for a renovation whose challenge is preserving the architecture while changing how guests use it.
How will guests get beyond the usual sights?
Kempinski's Experience Real Access programme will connect visitors with local makers, creatives and other Prague insiders through Resident Curators. The promised access is particularly interesting at a property where the surrounding monastic life continues independently of hotel guests.
For a trip built around the relaunch, ask the hotel which redesigned spaces will be ready for your dates and which curated experiences require advance arrangements. A broad opening window does not establish a particular arrival day or guarantee every part of a renovation will debut together.
