The Plaza Is Closing in January for a Surprisingly Long Restoration
New York’s Plaza Hotel will close in January 2027 for at least four years of facade repairs. Here is what the extended shutdown means for future stays.
The Plaza will close in January 2027 for at least four years while its protected exterior is repaired and restored. The timetable makes this much more than a seasonal interruption: travellers planning a New York stay around the Fifth Avenue landmark will need another address for several years.
Why does exterior work require such a long closure?
The hotel’s operator, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, says the project must account for the building’s architectural importance, preservation obligations and the safety of guests, employees and neighbours. HOTELSMag reports that neither the cost nor a detailed specification of the work has been disclosed.
That leaves an important distinction for prospective guests. The announced project concerns the landmark facade. It is too early to treat it as a confirmed redesign of the rooms, a new restaurant programme or a change in the hotel’s operator. Those would require separate announcements.
Four years is also a minimum, rather than a guaranteed reopening date. A stay in 2031 should therefore remain a possibility to watch, rather than a trip to build around a firm return to service.
What should guests with future plans do?
Anyone arranging a wedding, celebration or hotel stay from January should contact the property directly about their booking and the applicable arrangements. The closure reports do not establish a universal relocation or refund policy. Travellers should get confirmation for their own reservation before committing to flights or related events.
For a visit to New York City in the meantime, choose the replacement hotel around the part of the trip that matters most: access to Central Park, a particular suite configuration or a place to host a gathering. A famous address is difficult to substitute, but those practical requirements can still be matched.
Has The Plaza been through a shutdown before?
The hotel opened in 1907. Its 2005 to 2008 overhaul reshaped the building into a mix of hotel accommodation and private apartments. CoStar reports that the property now contains 282 hotel rooms and 181 condominiums. Katara Hospitality owns the property, while Fairmont operates it.
The forthcoming work is another reminder that historic hotels need long periods of care as well as glamorous public rooms. For guests, the immediate planning point is straightforward: confirm any 2027 arrangements with the hotel and wait for an official reopening date before treating the next chapter as bookable.
