Aman Tokyo is a vertical city hotel: Kerry Hill's washi-paper lantern on floors 33 through 38 of Otemachi Tower, looking over the Imperial Palace gardens. Eighty-four rooms, one of the more urban room counts in the Aman system, and a stay built around the city rather than the grounds. Book it when Tokyo food, galleries, and a serious hotel bar are the trip.
Aman Kyoto is the opposite shape: 26 rooms (plus two villas) set individually through an eight-acre forest garden north of the city, connected by stone paths rather than corridors. It was Kerry Hill's last major project. The hotel is the destination. You leave for temples and kaiseki; you return to silence that a tower cannot manufacture.
If you can only pick one Japan Aman, choose Tokyo for a first Japan city trip and Kyoto when the garden is the point.
