Amanwana: Secluded luxury tented island sanctuary on Moyo Island with pristine coral reef diving and jungle waterfalls

Set on the private, untouched island of Moyo within the Moyo Satonda National Park east of Bali, Amanwana opened in 1993 as architect Jean-Michel Gathy’s pioneering luxury tented wilderness camp. Translating to 'peaceful forest,' the retreat is the only resort on the 350-square-kilometre island, where zero trees were felled to accommodate its 20 luxury safari tents. Shaded by tropical tamarind and fig trees along a sheltered turquoise cove, the camp provides an extraordinary castaway experience surrounded by deer, macaque monkeys, and wild boars.

Arrival by private floatplane or luxury speedboat brings travelers directly onto the camp’s wooden jetty. Day-one logistics focus on coordinating wilderness and marine expeditions: guided treks through the tropical forest to swim in the limestone pools of Barry’s Falls, private boat excursions to the mysterious crater lake of Satonda Island, swimming with majestic whale sharks in Saleh Bay, and scuba diving on the untouched house reef.

Island living is intimate and adventurous: guests snorkel directly from the beach into coral gardens filled with sea turtles and tropical fish. The Jungle Cove Spa offers open-air beachfront massages beneath the forest canopy. Dining is centered in the soaring open-air teak Dining Room, serving freshly caught Indonesian seafood and international dishes beside the sea.

Accommodations comprise 20 luxury safari tents (58 square metres each, including Jungle Tents and Ocean Tents steps from the water) and two 100-square-metre Ocean Pool Tents. Each tent features hardwood floors, solid stone foundations, canvas roofs, air conditioning, king beds, net canopies, and spacious bathrooms with double vanities.

Adventure purists, divers, and luxury castaways seeking untouched coral reefs, wild jungle immersion, and luxury safari tents on a private Indonesian island should book Amanwana without hesitation. Travelers seeking luxury marble villas or urban nightlife should look elsewhere. Grounded review consensus confirms legendary standing with a 4.9 out of 5 on Tripadvisor across 320 reviews and a 4.8 out of 5 on Google across 210 reviews.
