Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois: A Rhine-side Basel grand hotel spanning historic Blumenrain 8 and new-design Blumenrain 2.

Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois is a historic Rhine-side Basel hotel at Blumenrain 8, with seven additional keys in Herzog & de Meuron’s transformed Blumenrain 2. The original hotel opened in 1844; the newer building opened in June 2025. It is a serious food-and-design address, but the building and room choice matter: Rhine versus Old Town, balcony versus no balcony, and historic versus Blumenrain 2 are all real distinctions.

Book the exact card. Blumenrain 8 ranges from a 19 m² City Business Room for one traveller to 70 m² River Suites and the Napoleon Suite; River Junior Suites, River Suites and the Napoleon Suite allow up to two additional beds on request. The 240 m² Suite des Rois in Blumenrain 2 has two king bedrooms, dining for eight, private gym, bar/lounge and a city-view balcony. Do not assume the non-balcony River Suite has a terrace: its prose conflicts with its amenity list, while a separate Balcony category exists. The former River Family Two-Bedroom is not on the current site and must not be booked as current inventory.

Reserve dining early and match it to the calendar. Cheval Blanc is open Tuesday evening and Wednesday–Saturday lunch and dinner; the house publishes stylish-attire rules and annual winter closure periods. Brasserie Les Trois Rois runs lunch Monday–Saturday and dinner daily, with final kitchen orders at 21:30. Banks is closed Monday and Tuesday; Sushi-style spontaneity is not the model here—Banks uses a sharing menu, and its live page gives last orders rather than closing times. Afternoon tea has daily 14:00–16:00 and 16:30–18:30 seatings and cannot be made vegan, lactose-free or gluten-free.

Seijaku Wellbeing is included for hotel guests during its daily 10:30–19:30 opening hours and is 16+. It has sauna, bio-sauna, steam room, rooftop cold-water plunge, relaxation spaces and a 24-hour gym; treatments are extra and need 24-hour cancellation. Sauna clothing wording conflicts on the hotel’s own terms, so confirm directly if that matters. The public onsen-style experience does not exist here: the only pool published is a cold rooftop plunge.

Book for Basel’s food, art and Rhine views; skip it if you need a guaranteed accessible-room specification, a family programme, confirmed 24-hour room service or a pool-led wellness stay. Retained traveler evidence is strong, but it does not remove the need to select a room by its individual card and reserve the restaurant that defines the visit.

First day

  1. Reserve the restaurant plan before arrival, especially Cheval Blanc or Banks, and use the published opening days rather than assuming every outlet operates nightly.
  2. Choose the exact building and room: balcony, city/Rhine view, bed type and extra-bed policy are card-specific.
  3. Book Seijaku treatments early if wanted; arrive 15 minutes early and note the 16+ wellness rule.

Guests Love

  • Rhine-side setting

Retained guest evidence values the central river setting and the distinct character of a historic Basel hotel.

  • Food and service

Retained traveler evidence consistently treats dining and polished service as the central reasons to stay.

Guests Warn

  • Room specificity

The room programme is too varied for a generic upgrade; guests should confirm the exact view, balcony and bed configuration.

  • Planning required

Restaurant closures, wellness age rules and published service times reward a planned visit rather than spontaneous use.
