Hotel Marqués de Riscal, a Luxury Collection Hotel: Frank Gehry's 61-room City of Wine hotel above the vineyards and medieval Elciego

Hotel Marqués de Riscal occupies Frank Gehry's only hotel building in the Marqués de Riscal City of Wine at Elciego. Opened on 10 October 2006, it has 61 individually shaped guestrooms and suites, including 10 suites, split between the sculptural Gehry Wing and the Spa Wing across a raised glass walkway. Gehry also designed the interiors. The hotel sits inside a working wine estate founded in 1858; the estate dates construction of the Original Bodega to 1860, despite Marriott copy that variously calls the first or original cellar an 1858 construction.

Choose the wing and exact category before confirming the stay. Marriott's current public room feed is empty, leaving only two usable editorial cards: the Gehry Suite and the approximately 65-square-metre Riscal Suite Terrace. Other official labels--Premium Spa Room, Premium Spa Terrace Room, Deluxe Gehry, Deluxe Spa, Premium Gehry, Riscal Suite and King Executive Suite--appear in imagery without a current card establishing their dimensions, occupancy or sellable status. The Riscal Suite Terrace card says Caudalie products while Marriott's general room copy says Byredo amenities in every room. Accessible-room wording also conflicts: the room page says inventory may be limited and selectable, then says no accessible rooms are available, while property details list extensive mobility and hearing features. Put the exact room, wing, bed, outlook and access setup in writing.

Fix arrival logistics directly with the house. The address is Calle Torrea 1, 01340 Elciego. Marriott lists Agoncillo at 45 kilometres, Vitoria at 67 and Bilbao at 140, plus Logroño Railway Station without a distance. It says no airport shuttle is provided, yet separately prints a zero-fee, complimentary-on-request private-car line for Agoncillo and Vitoria. Treat that wording as unresolved rather than a promised free transfer. Self-parking and valet parking are complimentary, an electric-car charger is subject to availability, and public off-site parking is 0.5 kilometres away. Check-in is 3:00 pm, checkout noon and the minimum check-in age is 18. The hotel is smoke-free, does not permit pets and welcomes service animals; the winery separately permits only guide dogs.

Reserve dining, spa and winery visits before arrival. Restaurante Marqués de Riscal serves Saturday lunch and Tuesday-Saturday dinner, closing Sunday and Monday. 1860 Tradición operates daily for lunch and dinner and hosts breakfast, though breakfast is stated as available for a fee. Asador Torrea's official calendars conflict: Marriott says Wednesday-Sunday 12:30-18:30, while the estate publishes a seasonal April-November calendar, daily June-October, a 12:00-20:00 venue window and 12:30-17:15 kitchen. Confirm the date and hours rather than choosing one version. Marriott counts four restaurants even though its cards comprise three restaurants and the Vinoteca wine bar; the Rooftop Lounge & Library is an additional drink setting, not a fifth restaurant. Twenty-four-hour room service is claimed, but no public menu or item-level availability is printed.

Spa Vinothérapie Caudalie spans a published 1,400 square metres in the Spa Wing. Wet Area and SPA Treatments run Sunday-Thursday 10 am-8 pm and Friday-Saturday 10 am-9 pm. Appointments are mandatory and cannot be booked online. The heated indoor pool is expressly for hotel guests; official pages also name water jets, hammam, Finnish sauna, rainforest shower, whirlpool, barrel tub, steam room, pediluvium and plunge pool. No child or treatment age rule, nonresident rule or treatment-room count is printed. Marriott marks the spa outlet "Included" without defining whether wet-area access is included, while treatments and packages are separately bookable; confirm access instead of assuming treatments are part of the room. The fitness outlet is called 24-Hour Fitness Centre in one place but the experiences FAQ gives complimentary hotel-guest access only from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Build the winery day around the live tour inventory. The visitor centre opens Monday-Sunday 10.00h-19.00h; the booking centre runs Monday-Friday 9.00-19.00 and Saturday 9.00-17.00. Tours are offered in Spanish, English, French, German, Chinese and Romanian. Visit Marqués de Riscal 1 and Sublimme admit children, although the English child band is mistranscribed and the Spanish page supplies ages 3-10, 11-17 and free 0-2. Tours 2 and 3 last 1 hour 45 minutes and exclude under-18s. The standard and Sublimme visits last 90 minutes. Complimentary bicycle rental is subject to availability; picnic hampers, guided culture, other wineries, tapas, golf and area excursions are concierge arrangements rather than promised inclusions.

Treat events separately from an ordinary stay. Marriott's capacity table shows six event rooms, while the estate says ten spaces plus a 100-seat auditorium and Marriott editorial adds La Bodega Vacada outside the six-row table. Maximum-capacity copy ranges from 400 for a gala to 500 for San Vicente 3 reception and 650 in other official prose, so setup-specific capacity must be confirmed. The current linked wedding kit says 2025 on its cover but contains sample menus budgeted for 2022-23; no event menu or condition from it should be treated as current without a fresh proposal.

Book this hotel for Gehry architecture, vineyard and village outlooks, a Caudalie wet circuit, estate wine access and a dining programme worth planning. Skip it if every room category must have a complete public specification, a guaranteed step-free category is essential before contacting the hotel, children need unrestricted wine-tour access, or a confirmed complimentary airport transfer is non-negotiable. Tripadvisor currently shows 4.5 from 1,399 reviews and Booking.com shows 9.0 from 471. Across both, the durable praise is the building, vineyard setting, staff, breakfast, spa and winery experience; the recurring caution is value, with smaller threads around room refresh, temperature or air conditioning and uneven mealtime service.

First day

  1. Reconfirm the airport or rail pickup, exact charge and meeting point; no shuttle is offered, while the zero-fee private-car wording for Agoncillo and Vitoria remains anomalous.
  2. Match the assigned room to the confirmed Gehry or Spa Wing, category, bed, outlook and access route; Marriott's public room pool is empty and accessibility wording conflicts.
  3. Reserve Restaurante Marqués de Riscal around its Saturday-lunch and Tuesday-Saturday-dinner calendar, and confirm breakfast terms at 1860 Tradición.
  4. Check Asador Torrea's live seasonal dates and hours because Marriott and the estate disagree on days and closing time.
  5. Book Spa Vinothérapie Caudalie by phone or email, ask what hotel-guest wet access includes and use the exact Sunday-Thursday or Friday-Saturday timetable.
  6. Confirm whether fitness access follows the 24-hour outlet name or the 8:00 am-8:00 pm FAQ.
  7. Reserve the winery language and tour, placing children only on Visit 1 or Sublimme and keeping under-18s off Tours 2 and 3.
  8. Record check-in at 3:00 pm, checkout at noon, minimum check-in age 18, no-pet rule and the separate service-animal or winery guide-dog position.
  9. If driving, retain the complimentary self or valet parking plan and reserve the electric charger because it is subject to availability.

Guests Love

  • Architecture and vineyard setting define the stay

Both scored traveler sources repeatedly centre Frank Gehry's building, the surrounding vines and winery context as the reasons the property feels singular.

  • Spa, breakfast and staff sustain the experience

Current review patterns consistently praise the well-equipped indoor spa and pool, breakfast outlook and a generally friendly, attentive team.

  • Cleanliness and room outlooks score strongly

Tripadvisor's category feedback is especially strong for cleanliness and rooms, while verified Booking.com reviews repeatedly mention space, terraces and vineyard views.

Guests Warn

  • Value trails the overall score

Tripadvisor's value category is materially below the overall rating, and both platforms contain a recurring pattern that the total stay does not always justify expectations.

  • Room refresh and climate control divide a minority

A smaller but repeated group describes aging room details or air-conditioning and temperature issues despite the strong room aggregate.

  • Mealtime service can be uneven

Most service feedback is positive, but recurring minority comments identify slower or less polished execution around breakfast and restaurant service.

The overall score is a review-count-weighted average of named public platforms, normalized to /10. Category scores — including cleanliness and location — are Hotel Flock editorial readings of those reviews, not a platform's private formula. Hotel Flock is not affiliated with Tripadvisor, Booking.com, Trivago, or any other review site.

In the stay

  • Complimentary on-site self-parking and valet parking
  • Complimentary bicycle rental subject to availability
  • Complimentary fitness-centre access for hotel guests within the officially published but conflicting hours
  • A complimentary winery tour where the selected room card or confirmed booking expressly states it

  • –Spa treatments, rituals, packages and gifts
  • –Winery visits not expressly included in the confirmed room booking
  • –Picnic hampers, private transport, golf and concierge-arranged area excursions unless confirmed otherwise

Good to Know

  • Asador Torrea conflicts across official sources on operating days, seasonality and closing time; retain both schedules and confirm directly.
  • The fitness outlet is titled 24-Hour Fitness Centre, while Marriott's experiences FAQ gives hotel-guest access from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
  • Marriott simultaneously says accessible rooms may be limited and selectable, says no accessible rooms are available, and lists extensive accessible-room features.
  • General room copy says Byredo amenities in all rooms, while the Riscal Suite Terrace card specifically says Caudalie products.
  • Marriott counts four restaurants, but the cards are three restaurants and Vinoteca & Bistro as the hotel bar; the rooftop lounge sits outside those four cards.
  • Marriott tables six event rooms, the estate says ten spaces plus an auditorium, and La Bodega Vacada appears only in Marriott editorial.
  • Official event capacities range from 400 for banquet gala to 500 for a San Vicente 3 reception and 650 in broader event copy; setup and combination are not reconciled.
  • The currently linked wedding PDF says 2025 on the cover but labels sample menus for 2022-23.
  • Marriott marks the Caudalie spa outlet included but does not define wet-area entitlement, while treatments and packages remain separately bookable.
  • Marriott denies airport shuttle service but prints a zero-fee, complimentary-on-request private-car line for Agoncillo and Vitoria.
  • The English winery page corrupts a child age band; the Spanish official page resolves the bands as 0-2, 3-10 and 11-17.
  • Marriott variously ties the first or original cellar to 1858, while the estate distinguishes the company's 1858 founding from Original Bodega construction beginning in 1860.

Editor's Note

Treat the hotel, winery and City of Wine visitor facilities as connected but distinct. Put the exact wing and room, access route, airport car terms, Asador calendar, spa entitlement and age-appropriate winery tour in the confirmation before travel.
