Langkawi, Malaysia
The Datai Langkawi: Kerry Hill's rainforest ridge retreat above Datai Bay, with eleven room and villa choices and a beach below
The Datai Langkawi occupies the island's northwestern tip between Datai Bay and the Machincang rainforest. Opened in 1993 to Kerry Hill's design and extensively refurbished in 2017–2018 under Didier Lefort of DL2A, it offers 121 rooms, suites and villas across Canopy, Rainforest and Beach collections. Its architecture received the Aga Khan Award in 2001. The Datai operates under its own name rather than another hotel flag.
Lock the room and transfer before arrival. The house gives The Datai Suite two sizes—378 and 258 square metres—and calls Canopy Garden both Canopy Garden and Canopy Deluxe Garden. Canopy Premium is described both with a rainforest outlook and with views of the main pool and Andaman Sea. Maximum occupancy is not stated by category. Children 11 and under stay free in existing bedding with a paying adult, subject to category limits; ages 5–11 carry a breakfast surcharge. Converting a daybed for an additional guest aged 12 or over costs extra, no rollaways are supplied, and selected unnamed balconies have a climbable lower ledge. Rainforest villas are raised on stilts without a step-free or steps-only promise.
Airport transfers take about 40 minutes over 30 kilometres and are vehicle-specific. The Datai Suite, Estate and Beach Villas include transfers, signature or à la carte breakfast, afternoon tea and broader minibar benefits; standard categories have narrower terms. Canopy Deluxe, Garden and Premium and the two non-pool Rainforest categories include minibar drinks but exclude snacks and spirits. Canopy Suite and Rainforest Pool Villa add snacks and miniature spirits. The top categories add drinks, snacks and miniature spirits but exclude wine-cooler wines. Foreign visitors should complete Malaysia's Digital Arrival Card at least three days before entry.
Reserve the Dining Room at least 24 hours ahead. The house describes it both as serving breakfast and lunch and as serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. No weekly closure is stated. Under-12s cannot attend Dining Room dinner or remain in the Lobby Lounge after 19:00; under-16s are asked not to use the Beach Bar counter. Dining Room dinner requires men to wear long trousers, a collared shirt and closed shoes. Beach Club lunch accepts reasonably covered beachwear, while dinner excludes swimwear, gym attire and sleeveless shirts and asks men for knee-length dress shorts and a polo. Gulai House and Pavilion require headphones for device audio and ask guests to take calls away from the table. Private Dining has no stated capacity, hours or minimum notice, while in-room dining has no public timetable. Allergen cross-contact cannot be ruled out.
The Spa is open daily 10:00–21:00; reserve ahead and arrive 15 minutes early. Packages need 24 hours' cancellation notice. Single treatments need six hours: within six hours the charge is 50%, and within two hours it is the full treatment charge. Disclose illness, injury, pregnancy and other health concerns because most treatments can be adapted. Malay Wellness needs 48 hours, takes no more than six, requires proper footwear and swimwear and is described both as for ages 18 and above and for guests above 18. Holistic sessions and the daily 07:30–08:30 Beach Fitness Bootcamp need 24 hours' notice; outdoor sessions may depend on weather or tide.
There are no lifeguards. The Main Pool, also called the Adult Pool, is for ages 16 and over; under-16s should use the Family and Toddler area with an adult. The house counts the water both as three pools and as two pools plus a toddler or wading pool. Under-12s need an adult with watersports equipment. The Health Club prohibits under-12s and permits children over 12 with supervision, leaving exactly age 12 unresolved. Under-18 spa users need a guardian waiver and nearby supervision; below 13, the guardian stays inside. Upcycling Workshop and The Lab are designed for ages 12 and over, and Little Gardener requires proper footwear.
Shared Gadis Pulao trips require at least six and take no more than twelve; under-12s cannot join. Gadis Pulao and Amanea require Concierge booking at least 24 hours ahead, remain subject to weather and the captain's discretion and ask guests to disclose allergies or dietary needs. The vessel is described both as 54 feet and as 17.07 metres or 56 feet 1 inch. Overnight Koh Lipe journeys include return harbour transfers, while ordinary yacht arrangements may involve changed docking and an additional transfer. The Lab is described as using both 9,010 and 7,968 bottles. One old Spa menu link and one old Dining Room beverage link no longer open although current menus remain available.
Beach, eligible pools, Health Club, non-motorised watersports and selected activities are broadly available, while treatments, golf, padel, later tennis hours, private sailing and bespoke experiences cost extra. No universal check-in, check-out, cancellation, pet, service-animal or physical-access policy is stated. Book The Datai for architecture, rainforest wildlife, a broad beach and several distinct dining styles. Skip it if insects and wildlife are unacceptable, every route must be demonstrably step-free or young guests need unrestricted use of every venue. Tripadvisor shows 4.8 from 3,278 reviews and Agoda 9.3 from 1,337 verified reviews; both repeatedly praise setting, spacious rooms, staff and dining, while minority cautions concern wildlife, occasional inconsistency and value.

First day
- Reconfirm vehicle, luggage fit and transfer inclusion; complete Malaysia's arrival card at least three days before entry.
- Verify room name, occupancy, Canopy Premium's two view descriptions and the suite-size or Canopy Garden naming conflict; selected room balconies have a climbable lower ledge, although the affected categories are not named, so keep children away and confirm step-free access if needed.
- No pet or service-animal policy is stated; obtain written confirmation before arriving with an animal.
- Reserve Dining Room 24 hours ahead and confirm venue calendars, exact dress and device rules, child restrictions and allergen handling.
- Confirm in-room dining times directly because no public operating timetable is stated; request children's choices in advance if needed.
- Book spa, arrive 15 minutes early, disclose health or pregnancy concerns and note the 50% charge within six hours and full charge within two hours.
- Confirm no-lifeguard pool supervision, the 16-plus main pool and the unresolved rule for a 12-year-old at the Health Club.
- For shared Gadis Pulao, confirm the minimum six, maximum twelve, under-12 prohibition and 24-hour Concierge notice; both yachts remain weather- and captain-dependent.
- Distinguish Koh Lipe transfer inclusion from standard docking and transfer terms, and disclose sailing allergies or dietary needs.
- Set breakfast and minibar expectations, including the ages 5–11 breakfast surcharge and charged converted daybed from age 12.
- Reserve holistic sessions and Beach Fitness Bootcamp 24 hours ahead; pack proper footwear for Malay Wellness and Little Gardener, and note age 12-plus at The Lab and Upcycling Workshop.
