Miavana by Time + Tide: A helicopter-only Time + Tide private island of vast beach villas, lemurs, reefs and tailor-made Madagascar adventures.

Miavana by Time + Tide occupies a private corner of Nosy Ankao, a wild island off Madagascar's northeast coast reached by helicopter. Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens designed the low stone-and-glass villas and the Piazza; the resort opened in 2017. Come to put crowned lemurs, reefs and remote Madagascar beside a private pool and empty beach, not for a conventional island resort with a restaurant street. The house currently gives two inventory pictures: 14 villas with eight one-bedrooms in its showcase, but 13 with seven one-bedrooms in commercial material.

Settle the flying plan first. The transfer is approximately 30 minutes from Diego Suarez or 60 minutes from Nosy Be, operates in daylight and requires passenger weights plus soft bags without rigid sides or wheels. One fleet document lists an R66 for three passengers plus pilot and an H130 for six plus pilot; the pre-arrival guide instead says two R66s. Once a guide boards, the current adventure guide allows two guests in the R66 or five in the H130. An older clause says no more than four people per helicopter and no more than three when a guide flies. Duration is equally unsettled: legal terms say adventures last up to about four hours, while the current guide gives a five-hour Ankarana trip and six-hour combinations. Ask for the aircraft, seats, route, duration and weather fallback in writing.

The island activity list is generous, but age and safety rules matter. Bubblemaker is for ages eight to nine and stays within two metres; Discover Scuba starts at age ten and goes no deeper than 12 metres. Guests who have not dived for six months need a refresher, certified divers should bring their card, and there is no compression chamber on the island. Under-16s may not drive quad bikes or electric buggies. All ages are welcome, but some activities do not suit younger children and adults remain responsible for supervision at all times.

Guided walks, snorkelling, boat cruises, cultural visits, shore and half-day fishing, diving around Miavana, selected introductory dive instruction, surf-ski, water-skiing, paddleboarding, wakeboarding, introductory kitesurfing, bicycles and quad biking sit in the standard activity list. The fine print still needs checking: one document includes introductory kitesurfing lessons while another calls beginner instruction optional and charges for additional tuition; shore and half-day fishing are included, but shorter deep-sea outings are not clearly resolved. Helicopter trips to lemur habitats, Tsingy, baobabs, the Northern Circuit and secluded sundowners are extra.

Meals, selected premium wines and champagne, spirits, bar drinks, laundry, butler service, a buggy, daily group yoga and one welcome wellness treatment are included. Reserve-list bottles, later spa treatments, private yoga, longer fishing, dive qualifications, boutique purchases, airport assistance and helicopter flying are usually extra unless an offer says otherwise; exclusive use excludes return helicopter transport. The island is cash-free, yet payment guidance conflicts: pre-arrival information accepts Visa and rejects American Express and Diners, while general terms say major cards are accepted. Confirm the card before travel.

There are three villa categories—one, two and three bedrooms—not four. They sleep two, four or six adults, each with an en-suite study for two children under 18. The newer showcase says every layout is at least 620 sq m; an older family guide says at least 450 sq m. Exclusive use buys those same villas rather than a separate residence: one source says 14 villas and 32 adults, another 13 villas and 42 guests, and the terms cap the party at 40 people. It requires five nights. Check-in is 14:00 and check-out 11:00, with earlier arrival or later departure subject to availability. No pet policy, step-free route or adapted-villa specification was found, so mobility and animal requests need a direct answer before booking.

Wellness comes to the villa, beach or forest instead of centring on a conventional spa building. The butler takes spa and yoga bookings from 09:00 to 21:00; that is a contact window, not building hours. The signature treatment is labelled 150 minutes and its components total 150 minutes, but the description also calls it two hours. Book Miavana if privacy, nature and ambitious days justify the journey. Skip it if you need easy ground access, many restaurants, a thermal spa or dependable schedules.
