Velaa Private Island: A 47-villa private island with serious kitchens, overwater wellbeing and an Olazábal golf academy.

Velaa is a self-contained private-island retreat in Noonu Atoll, shaped by Czech architect Petr Kolář around the island’s turtle story: Velaa means “turtle” locally, and the overwater villas form the head when seen from above. Velaa has 47 villas, houses and residences, 18 over water, across 11 bookable categories; every category lists a private pool. Four one-bedroom villas, two two-bedroom houses, four four-bedroom residences and the boat-only Romantic Residence create a much wider choice than the simple beach-versus-water decision suggests. Book for an owner-led island with named restaurants, a deep wellbeing programme and unusual recreation; skip it if you need a night-arrival seaplane, a blanket all-inclusive promise, public accessibility detail or policies that can be settled entirely online.

Lock the arrival first. The journey from Velana International Airport is roughly 45 minutes by daylight seaplane, with services operating between 6:00 AM and 5:00 PM; arrivals after 3:30 PM and departures before 9:00 AM require a Malé overnight. Maafaru is the private-jet alternative, followed by about seven minutes by seaplane or 35 minutes by yacht. Then reserve Aragu, ask which nights Tavaru and its cellar operate, coordinate spa or Eveylaa consultations, and have any in-villa chef or destination dinner written into the plan. The Romantic Residence is accessible only by boat. Families should ask for the present kids-club ages and hours, pool-safety arrangements and restaurant access because none are public. Velaa previously described a shared-seaplane child discount for ages 2–11, but its current transfer terms omit it; ask whether it applies rather than budgeting on it.

The accommodation fine print deserves its own call. Velaa writes one-bedroom occupancy as “2+1” and the houses as “4+1” without defining the extra guest; four-bedroom residences list 10 guests. Velaa lists Kuredhi with four bedrooms, four bathrooms and a private gym, yet describes only two master bedrooms elsewhere and omits the gym from those highlights. Velaa gives Nirolhu as 1,324 m² in one place and 1,350 m² in another. Nika and Funa each list 1,324 m² yet describe one terrace as “expansive 38 m².” Because Velaa gives these details side by side, ask which configuration and measurement will apply to your booking. Beach Pool House is the clearest family layout, with two detached bedroom villas and a shallow children’s wading area, while the Romantic Residence exchanges walkable access for 598 m² of boat-only privacy.

Dining is unusually legible by Maldives standards: Aragu for East-meets-West fine dining, Tavaru for teppanyaki in the tower, Faiy for wellbeing-led cooking and Athiri for the relaxed daily rhythm. Cru, Avi and Beach Bar cover Champagne, dusk drinks and light bites; the Tavaru cellar, private occasion dining and in-villa service extend the list. Aragu alone publishes hours, 7:00 PM–11:00 PM, so confirm every other timetable, child rule and closure. At the spa, Velaa supports overwater treatments, Cloud 9, Dream Pod, sauna, steam and what it calls the Maldives’ only snow room, while Eveylaa adds Ayurveda, diagnostics, physiotherapy, nutrition and fitness. Public spa hours and treatment policies are not printed. The site displays controls for activity, golf, spa, wellbeing, floor-plan and buyout collateral, but the download buttons do not currently lead to usable files; Velaa’s earlier spa-menu PDF now returns 404, so request current documents directly.

Golf is more than a token putting green. Velaa currently describes José María Olazábal’s academy as a nine-hole par-3 short-game course with flexible combinations, one-to-one PGA coaching, TrackMan and swing analysis, welcoming beginners and families. An earlier Velaa description says seven holes and nine tees, which may explain the flexible routing but does not fully match the current label; ask Velaa to clarify the physical-hole count if it matters. Diving ranges from beginner to divemaster PADI certification, and marine programming includes guided reef work and coral-regeneration participation. Previously advertised watersports equipment and yachts may change, so use the activities list supplied for your stay rather than assuming every earlier option remains available.

What is included depends on the offer. The arrival service includes an airport-butler welcome and private-lounge escort, while the island promises personal-butler service and each booked villa’s listed private pool and facilities. There is no blanket inclusion for meals, wine, spa, diagnostics, private chefs, destination dining or transfers. Current transfer quotes say service charge and tourism tax are included, but those changing figures should be confirmed on the live quotation; obtain the live written quote. Cancellation, deposit, check-in, check-out, child occupancy, crib, smoking, pet and accessibility terms all need confirming with the booking.

Independent reviews are emphatic but useful at the edges. Tripadvisor showed 4.9/5 from 330 reviews when checked on 30 August 2026, with recurring praise for attentive service, privacy, food and the island setting. Dorsia’s 2024 independent repeated-stay review also praised Aragu, Tavaru and the overall pull of Velaa while repeatedly criticising the original villa layouts, storage and interior design. Those are patterns, not guarantees: guests who spend their day across restaurants, golf, sea and spa are likelier to love the breadth, while room-design purists should inspect the exact category and refurbishment status. Choose Velaa for highly personalised service and an island that can keep very different interests occupied; skip it if opaque inclusions, daylight-only access or unresolved room-plan details will nag throughout the stay.
