Wilderness Mombo: Floodplain suites, private plunge pools and predator-rich safari days on Chief’s Island
Wilderness Mombo stands on the north-eastern tip of Chief’s Island inside Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve, with raised wood-and-canvas suites facing a wildlife-rich Okavango floodplain. Each suite has a veranda, outdoor sala and private plunge pool; the family suite links double and twin sleeping rooms for four. The inventory does not reconcile across Wilderness material: several owner features describe eight suites including the family suite, while the current FAQ describes eight double suites plus one family unit, nine tents and a maximum of 18 guests. The latter layout would imply 20 guests. The same material puts the traversing area at both 35,000 hectares and more than 45,000 hectares. Ask for the booked unit, total sellable inventory and camp capacity on the final quotation. Little Mombo is a separate adjacent sister camp with four rooms, its own facilities and optional exclusive use.
The camp was rebuilt during a project that Wilderness chronicles from April 2017 to late January 2018, and multiple owner features call 2018 the rebuild or reopening year. The current camp FAQ instead says it was completely rebuilt in 2019, so both dates belong on the booking record until Wilderness clarifies the milestone. The suites are raised above an unfenced setting where wildlife can pass beneath walkways. No floor areas, private-pool dimensions, exact step counts, accessible rooms or verified step-free route are given. The gym is described as the only air-conditioned place at camp; do not expect suite air conditioning. Families also need a written ruling: one Mombo family feature uses an age-six framing, general family guidance says most camps are six-plus, the current Mombo FAQ requires a private vehicle for every child under 13 joining game drives, and another family feature applies that vehicle requirement to families with children generally.
Mombo’s core safari programme includes morning and afternoon game drives, private-vehicle options, hide viewing, birding, stargazing and photography guidance. The Moremi page still says national-park rules prohibit night drives, but a later Wilderness press release dated 21 August 2026 explains that recent regulatory changes opened after-dark activity in Mombo’s private traversing area and introduced guided night drives for the first time. The older prohibition remains useful history, not the current operating rule. The same release adds boating and mokoro for Mombo and Little Mombo guests after unusually high water reconnected the channels. Boating leaves Kubu Jetty on a dedicated six-seat covered boat, includes snacks and refreshments and replaces an afternoon game drive; mokoro excursions use traditional-style canoes poled by experienced guides. Night drives, boating and mokoro are all seasonal and subject to water levels, availability, weather and operating conditions. Regional walking and fishing language still does not establish either activity at Mombo.
Access is normally arranged by light aircraft from Maun or Kasane to Mombo’s private airstrip, with the camp transfer included where Wilderness Air operates the booked route. A Moremi notice still says the airstrip was closed in 2025 after heavy summer rains and that helicopter access was then required, while the same page also describes normal landings. Treat the closure as dated, yet reconfirm the runway and aircraft type for the travel date. Wilderness Air’s current detailed allowance is 20 kilograms total per person, including hand luggage, camera gear and medical equipment, with maximum bag dimensions of 30 by 35 by 70 centimetres. It permits certain soft bags with rigid bases, wheels or collapsible handles in Botswana and Zimbabwe, while other Wilderness packing guidance says no wheels, hard shells or rigid sides. The discrepancy concerns bag construction, not the stated weight or dimensions; a fully soft, wheel-free bag is the safest default until the operating carrier confirms otherwise.
Accommodation, meals, snacks, water, local beer, house wine, non-premium local spirits, twice-daily scheduled activities, guiding, park and concession fees, laundry and Wilderness24 are included. Airport or inter-camp transfers are included only when specified in the bespoke itinerary; Wilderness Air sectors are not automatically part of the room stay. Premium imported drinks, champagne, spa treatments, scenic helicopter flights, international flights, visas, gratuities and personal purchases are extra. Wilderness lists emergency medical evacuation insurance among inclusions, while its journey-planning guidance still calls comprehensive travel insurance with medical, evacuation, repatriation, cancellation and delay cover essential. Treat the included benefit as limited operator support, not a substitute for a personal policy.
The Sanctuary at Mombo has another unresolved identity. Its main description presents a wellness centre with treatment rooms, a 15-metre lap pool, sauna, ice bath, meditation cocoons, gym, showers, wellness deli and Remedy Bar. FAQ and structured copy on the same page instead describes a private two-villa camp for four with an infinity pool, private vehicle, guide, chef and butler. Ask which product a Sanctuary booking refers to. The two villas do not appear among Mombo’s confirmed suite choices, and the infinity pool should not be confused with the suite plunge pools, main camp pool or wellness lap pool.
Book Mombo for a small, wildlife-first safari camp where animals can remain in view from breakfast through the suite deck, and where private plunge pools, serious guiding and a newly broader activity choice matter more than fixed resort schedules. Skip it if the trip depends on a guaranteed night drive, boat, mokoro or fixed-wing landing; if a child under 13 must use a shared vehicle; if suite air conditioning or documented step-free access is essential; or if unresolved inventory language is unacceptable. Tripadvisor’s indexed property page showed 4.8 out of 5 from 294 reviews, while Wanderlog’s Google-attributed snapshot showed 4.7 from 22. Across Tripadvisor, Google-attributed comments and Expert Africa’s independent traveller reports, recurring praise centres on wildlife density, skilled guides, warm service, food and the view from camp; recurring cautions concern remote flight logistics, luggage restrictions, long safari days and escorted movement after dark in the unfenced camp.

First day
- Confirm the exact booked suite, whether the family unit sits inside or beyond the eight-suite inventory, and the camp’s true maximum capacity.
- For every child, confirm minimum-stay age, family-suite eligibility and whether a private safari vehicle is mandatory for the whole stay or specifically for under-13s joining drives.
- Verify the current airstrip, fixed-wing or helicopter routing, possible circuit stops and the camp transfer attached to each flight.
- Pack within Wilderness Air’s 20-kilogram total and 30 by 35 by 70 centimetre limit, then have the carrier settle the conflicting guidance on wheels and rigid bases.
- Ask which guided night drives, six-seat Kubu Jetty boat trips and mokoro excursions are operating; all are conditional, and boating replaces an afternoon game drive.
- Set the pre-drive meal, brunch, high tea, dinner and Monday boma plan; reserve any wine-cellar or private meal without treating it as room service.
- Reserve The Sanctuary treatments, confirm operating hours and clarify that the booking is for the wellness centre rather than the conflicted two-villa description.
- Check which flights and transfers are included, what the emergency evacuation benefit covers and what the personal travel-insurance policy must add.
- Ask for after-dark escort practice, malaria guidance and an exact mobility route if raised walkways or steps may be difficult.

Category breakdown
Guests Love
Wildlife density
Independent review patterns repeatedly place abundant lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and plains-game sightings at the centre of the Mombo stay, often beginning within view of camp.
Guiding and service
Travellers consistently describe guides as skilled and enthusiastic and the wider camp team as warm, attentive and knowledgeable.
Food and suites
Recurring reviews praise the quality of meals, spacious tented accommodation and the ability to watch wildlife without leaving the deck.
Guests Warn
Remote logistics
Flight routing, strict luggage allowances and changing airstrip or flood conditions demand more advance coordination than a conventional hotel arrival.
Intense safari rhythm
Long game-drive days and early starts can be tiring, while wildlife in the unfenced camp makes escorted movement after dark important.
Family planning
Conflicting child and private-vehicle wording means families need age-specific written confirmation before relying on shared drives.

Good to Know
- Inventory and capacity conflict: eight suites including the family suite versus eight doubles plus one family unit; 18 guests is stated, while the latter arrangement implies 20.
- Little Mombo is a separate four-room sister camp connected by raised walkways, with its own facilities and optional exclusive use.

- The traversing area is described as both 35,000 hectares and more than 45,000 hectares.

- Boating from Kubu Jetty replaces an afternoon drive, while mokoro offers a quieter canoe outing; both are seasonal and subject to water, weather, availability and operations.
- The Sanctuary is a wellness centre in its main content and a private two-villa camp in conflicting FAQ copy; do not treat the villas as confirmed inventory.
- A dated 2025 airstrip-closure notice conflicts with normal private-airstrip access language; reconfirm fixed-wing or helicopter routing.
- Wilderness Air gives a 20-kilogram total and fixed dimensions; the conflict is whether a soft bag may have wheels or a rigid base.
- Family guidance conflicts on minimum age and whether every family with children, or only under-13s joining drives, must book a private vehicle.
- Flights and transfers are included only when the itinerary specifies them.
- Included emergency evacuation support does not replace comprehensive personal travel insurance.
- The gym is described as the only air-conditioned place; suites should not be sold as air-conditioned.
- No public Mombo check-in, check-out, pet, cot, rollaway or detailed accessibility policy is given.
Editor's Note
Make the itinerary do the hard work: secure written confirmation of the exact suite and camp capacity, every child’s vehicle rule, current airstrip and luggage conditions, operating activities, Sanctuary booking, transfer inclusions and insurance limits before the deposit becomes non-refundable.
