This New Luxury Camp Has Five Suites and 4,600 Square Miles of Salt Around It

A&K Sanctuary, the lodge, camp and riverboat collection owned by A&K Travel Group, will open Samkani Camp on Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni late next year. The site is the largest salt flat on earth, roughly 4,600 square miles of it, and the camp will hold five guest suites.

The build is six Airstream trailers. Five are suites and the sixth is a shared dining and lounge space with its own bar. The suites are architect-designed and finished in blue Bolivian marble and chrome, which is a considerably more deliberate treatment than the trailers most travelers picture. The name translates as "the one who dreams" in Aymara, the indigenous language of the Altiplano.

Every stay includes a private guide and driver. A&K says more than 30 excursions will be available across the flat, including volcanic caves and stargazing, with some reserved for Sanctuary guests. A Bolivian team will run them. Rooms will be sold as part of an A&K Tailormade itinerary or a Small Group Journey, with an on-sale date still to be confirmed.

The back story

The camp follows A&K's autumn 2025 purchase of Crillon Tours, a Bolivia specialist whose assets included the destination management company DMC Bolivia and a fleet of Airstream trailers. A&K said at the time that it intended to invest in those trailers to bring them up to Sanctuary standard. Samkani is what that investment looks like.

It also fills an obvious hole. High-altitude South America has a well-established luxury cluster in Chile and Peru, with Awasi Atacama and Explora Atacama in the Atacama, and Sanctuary Lodge at Machu Picchu. Bolivia has drawn the same photographs and almost none of the same beds.
