Banyan Tree Opens Its First Safari Escape With Only Six Villas

Ubuyu, a Banyan Tree Escape in Tanzania's Ruaha National Park, debuts with six river villas, Escape Hosts, and the group's first true safari stay.

Banyan Tree has opened Ubuyu, a Banyan Tree Escape in Tanzania's Ruaha National Park, marking the group's first dedicated safari experience and only its second Escape property worldwide. The retreat sits along the Great Ruaha River in southern Tanzania's Iringa region, a quieter alternative to the busier northern circuit around the Serengeti.

Why Ruaha, and why now

Ruaha is where East African savannah meets southern miombo woodland. Banyan Tree positions it as more intimate than the classic northern parks: large elephant herds, a dense lion population, endangered African wild dogs, and more than 570 bird species. The land also sits within the cultural landscape of the Hehe, Bena, and Kinga peoples, which the Escape Host program is designed to engage carefully rather than as a checklist stop.

Ancient baobabs frame the entrance (ubuyu means baobab), and the architecture borrows from the river's curve and circular Maasai homestead forms. Villas use locally sourced clay, timber, and thatch, with Mninga wood furniture made by Tanzanian artisans. Solar power, locally sourced water, and a low-impact footprint are part of the operating brief, not an afterthought brochure line.

What guests actually get

Capacity is the story. Ubuyu has just six private villas, each with its own plunge pool and a deck oriented for sunrise and wildlife. The first-phase mix includes three One-Bedroom River Front Villas, a secluded One-Bedroom River Glade Villa, a Two-Bedroom River View Villa, and the signature Ubuyu Private Retreat, a three-suite residence with a 360-degree rooftop terrace, firepit lounge, and private-chef option.

  • Living Room: open-air gathering space modeled on a Maasai enkang, centered on a firepit
  • Open Kitchen: plant-forward menu using produce from nearby farms and villages
  • Mganga Bar: rooftop drinks with native botanicals over the river and bush
  • Maji Spa: riverside treatments using local oils and herbs

Every stay is paired with an Escape Host who plans walking safaris, village exchanges, and riverside dinners beyond standard game drives. Access is via Msembe Airstrip, then a 45- to 60-minute game drive. Scheduled flights reach Ruaha from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Zanzibar, the Serengeti, and Selous.

What this means for safari travelers

Ultra-luxury safari inventory usually means tented camps or lodge brands already deep in East Africa. Banyan Tree is arriving late to the category but with a deliberately tiny footprint and a host-led model closer to private guiding than resort programming. For travelers who already know Phuket or Bali under the brand, Ubuyu is a different product: fewer keys, harder logistics, and wildlife as the main stage rather than spa and beach.
