Nihi Rote's Soft Opening Window Closes as the Full Resort Takes Shape

Nihi Sumba's sister on Rote Island is finishing spa, pool, and Ombak dining for its October launch, with soft rates still listed from about $800.

Nihi Rote & Hospitality Academy, the sister resort to Nihi Sumba, is moving from soft opening into a fuller launch on Indonesia's remote Rote Island. Villas have welcomed guests since April 16, 2026; the main pool, spa, and Ombak Restaurant & Bar were set to come online through September, with the property's official launch framed around October 1 and soft-opening "Stay in the Making" arrangements running into mid-to-late October.

For travelers who already chase Sumba's wave-and-wellness formula, Rote is the quieter eastern alternative: 21 one- and two-bedroom villas (about 1,400 to 2,900 square feet) with private plunge pools on Bo'a Beach, plus surf access to breaks such as T-Land at Nemberala. Soft rates have been listed from about $800 on a full-board basis through September, with prices expected to rise as amenities finish.

What makes the hospitality academy part of the stay?

Guests do not check in at a conventional front desk. Arrival runs through the Rote Hospitality Academy by Nihi, where students from Rote and neighboring Timor-Leste train in culinary arts, hospitality, and sustainability while helping operate the resort. The academy was developed with support from investor and surfer Michael Schwab; student selection has involved partners including Timor-Leste's leadership. Nihi Hotels CEO and cofounder James McBride has described the focus as giving Rotenese young people a real pathway into hospitality rather than a decorative CSR banner.

That setup will feel different from a finished flagship on day one. Soft-opening stays mean some outlets and rituals are still settling. Guests who want polished consistency should wait for post-October dates; guests who want to watch a Nihi property take shape, and meet the academy cohort, should book the remaining soft window while inventory lasts.

What can you book on the ground now?

Nammo Beach Club already covers charcoal-grilled seafood, rotisserie dishes, and wood-fired pizza beside the break. Experiences include fishing and diving trips, guided hikes, surf shuttles, and wellness classes, with Nirvana Life practitioners visiting for curated retreats. The resort aims for zero plastic and uses Rotenese building methods such as coconut-leaf roofs and hand-carved wood. Larger branded residences are planned beside the hotel keys.

Getting there still takes commitment: fly from Bali, Sumba, Jakarta, or Kupang into Rote (RTI), then drive about 90 minutes along the coast. A three-night minimum is requested for soft-opening bookings. Pairing Rote with Sumba remains the natural dual-island itinerary for guests who want two Nihi coastlines without bouncing back through Bali between every stay.

Who should move now versus wait?

Bookers chasing lower introductory rates and academy-forward hospitality should secure September or early October dates before soft pricing ends. Travelers who need a finished spa circuit, main pool, and Ombak dinner service should hold for confirmed post-launch calendars. Either way, treat Nihi Rote as a dedicated surf-and-wellness destination, not a casual Bali add-on: the transfer chain rewards longer stays.
