Nobu Hotel San Juan Plans a 50-Room Puerto Rico Debut for 2028
Nobu will open its first Puerto Rico hotel in San Juan in 2028: a 50-room stay with a street-level Nobu restaurant and a rooftop lounge, developed with KTT.
Nobu Hotel and Restaurant San Juan will be Nobu Hospitality's first property in Puerto Rico, a 50-room luxury hotel scheduled to open in 2028 in San Juan. The project, developed with real estate firm KTT, pairs a signature Nobu restaurant and bar at street level with a rooftop lounge and bar above, aiming to blend the old city's energy with the brand's quieter, understated hotel style.
For travelers who already chase Nobu for dinner as much as for a key, the plan is straightforward: sleep upstairs from the black cod, then finish the night on the roof. At 50 rooms, the hotel is deliberately intimate rather than a convention-scale tower, which puts it closer in spirit to other small Caribbean luxury addresses than to a large resort grid. Puerto Rico already has ultra-luxury inventory such as The St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort; Nobu adds a city-forward, restaurant-led option in San Juan itself.
What guests can expect in 2028
Nobu says accommodations will be thoughtfully designed, with service inspired by omotenashi, the Japanese practice of anticipating needs before a guest asks. Room categories, interior designers and rate bands have not been released. What is confirmed is the dual public stage: a full Nobu restaurant and bar opening onto the street, plus a rooftop lounge and bar that gives overnight guests and locals a second venue after dinner.
CEO Trevor Horwell framed Puerto Rico as one of the Caribbean's most compelling destinations for history, culture and hospitality, and said the brand wants to become part of a storied San Juan neighborhood rather than arrive as a sealed compound. KTT managing partner Joakim Lehmkuhl called out the city's mix of culture, history and energy as the shared reason the partnership works.
Why this matters for trip planning
Nobu began as a restaurant concept from chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro and Meir Teper before entering hotels in 2009. The San Juan signing extends that restaurant-first model into a Caribbean capital that already draws travelers for Old San Juan's streets, the waterfront and a serious food scene. Guests planning 2028 Caribbean itineraries should watch for room design, booking dates and exact neighborhood details closer to opening; reservations are not yet live.
Until then, the headline for planners is scale and format. Fifty rooms, a destination restaurant at street level and a rooftop bar signal a stay built around dinner and late hours as much as around a beach club day. That is a different product from a resort-only vacation, and it is the clearest reason San Juan just moved up on the Nobu map.
