The Observatory Opens October 30 as Viceroy's Sun Valley Dark-Sky Hotel
The Observatory, a Viceroy resort in Ketchum, opens October 30 with 73 rooms, a rooftop observatory and Rivian ski shuttles inside Idaho's Dark Sky Reserve.
Viceroy Hotels & Resorts will welcome first guests to The Observatory, A Viceroy Resort on October 30, 2026, at 300 River Street East in downtown Ketchum, a few minutes from skiing at Sun Valley Lodge. The 73-room mountain hotel sits inside the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, the first Gold Tier International Dark Sky Reserve in the United States, and crowns the building with a rooftop observatory programmed by local astrophotographer Travis Amick.
What makes the rooftop observatory different from a typical mountain spa terrace?
Two telescopes sit on the roof, including a PlaneWave observatory-class instrument and a motion telescope that tracks objects across the night sky. Guests do not peer through the eyepieces. Live digital images feed screens in the rooftop observatory lounge, and the same feed can reach televisions in guestrooms, so someone in bed can watch the slice of sky the telescopes are tracking. Programming with Amick covers stargazing, private sessions and events timed to meteor showers and planetary alignments. School groups and the public can book by reservation, which turns a hotel amenity into a town window on the dark sky.
How many keys, residences and public spaces does the hotel have?
The hotel opens with 73 guest rooms plus 12 for-sale residences on the top two floors. Room sizes start just under 400 square feet, with larger studio suites around 550 square feet, king beds, electric shades, blackout drapes and personalized mini-bars guests can stock before arrival. A 10,000-square-foot heated pool terrace faces Trail Creek with a plunge pool, hot tub, cabanas and snow-melt deck. The 5,600-square-foot spa on the creek level, due mid-November, adds steam, thermal pool, cold plunge, Finnish sauna and six treatment rooms, while a 1,200-square-foot Technogym fitness room looks toward Bald Mountain.
What should ski guests expect on arrival?
Valets greet cars at a one-way drive-through off River Street and park in a garage with 109 spaces under the building. In the morning, skis and boots wait at Odin's Corner, a ground-floor ski lounge and coffee shop named for a Bernese Mountain dog. Gear never rides the elevator to rooms. A ski concierge loads equipment into one of six master-leased Rivian electric vehicles that shuttle guests to the mountain and pick them up at the airport. Grab-and-go espresso and house-baked pastries cover early starts.
Where do you eat, and who is cooking?
Signature restaurant and bar Joan seats about 65 to 70 in the main room, with a display kitchen, a private dining room for roughly a dozen and a northwest patio with a fire pit. Executive chef Nicola Cavicchini brings nearly two decades at addresses including Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea and Rosewood Miramar Beach, pairing Italian seasonality with Western ingredients. The zinc-topped bar keeps 14 stools and shares the menu with the lounge. Acoustic walnut ceilings are designed so conversation stays audible, a deliberate contrast to the din common in mountain hotels that treat dinner as background noise.
Why does this opening matter for Sun Valley travellers?
Sun Valley has long drawn a quiet luxury crowd, but downtown Ketchum lacked a polished full-service flag with this mix of ski logistics and dark-sky programming. Sibling stays such as Viceroy Snowmass and Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort show how the brand leans on place-led experiences; here the place is the night sky over Idaho. For guests planning a fall or early-winter trip, October 30 is the first-guest date, with spa access following about two weeks later.
