The Plaza Seoul Closes September 30 for a Three-Year Ultra-Luxury Rebuild

Hanwha's Seoul landmark opposite City Hall closes September 30 for a suite-heavy rebuild aiming at 2029, with LHW membership and a public rooftop planned.

The Plaza in Seoul's Sogong-dong district will suspend operations on September 30, 2026, before a full interior rebuild that Hanwha Hotels & Resorts says will reposition the 1976 landmark as an ultra-luxury, "seven-star" hotel. Construction is slated to begin in early 2027, with completion targeted for 2029. It is the property's first large-scale overhaul since 2010.

Travelers who still need a downtown Seoul stay this autumn should treat the final weeks of September as last call. Guests who already book Four Seasons Hotel Seoul for Gwanghwamun access will lose a nearby independent option for about three years, then gain a suite-heavier competitor aimed at global executives and VIP itineraries when The Plaza returns.

What changes inside the rebuild?

Hanwha plans to shrink the share of standard deluxe rooms and expand high-end suites, each with a dedicated workspace. The club lounge will grow to support frequent meetings. Fine dining is a core pillar: the owner wants Michelin-level restaurants on site and stronger links to nearby Plaza Dining so Sogong-dong reads as a culinary stop, not only a hotel block. The exterior facade facing Seoul Plaza and Deoksugung Palace will stay; the company is redesigning interiors and service rather than the skyline silhouette.

The Plaza is also pursuing membership in The Leading Hotels of the World, the independent luxury collection that includes addresses such as the Ritz Paris. If accepted, that affiliation would matter for guests who book through LHW benefits rather than a big chain loyalty program.

What does the public rooftop mean for a stay?

A new rooftop garden will open to hotel guests and city residents, reached by a dedicated exterior elevator from street level. Hanwha pitches viewing decks and a rooftop cafe with sightlines to City Hall, Gwanghwamun, Gyeongbokgung, and the Deoksugung area. For overnight guests, that means a hotel amenity that doubles as a public Seoul overlook rather than a sealed club floor.

The project sits inside Seoul's integrated redevelopment of Sogong Districts 1, 2, and 3, alongside Hanwha Building and Hanwha Finance Plaza sites. It also fits a wider Hanwha premiumization push that includes ANTO near Bukhansan and work on Galleria's Apgujeong luxury hall.

How should travelers plan around the closure?

If The Plaza is on a September itinerary, move stays to September 29 or earlier, or rebook downtown inventory now while autumn demand is still fluid. From October 2026 through 2029, expect the Sogong-dong skyline to stay familiar from the outside while the hotel product itself is offline. Watch for reservation reopenings closer to 2029, and for any LHW listing that would change how advisors package Seoul with Japan or China legs.
