Marriott's Most Secluded Hotel Brand Is Coming to a City for the First Time — in a 480-Meter Tower
Ritz-Carlton Reserve, a brand built around remote, hard-to-reach locations, is opening its first city hotel inside a Shanghai skyscraper.
Marriott is bringing Ritz-Carlton's most exclusive brand into a major city for the first time. Ritz-Carlton Reserve — until now reserved for remote resort settings — will open an urban property on Shanghai's North Bund in 2030, inside a mixed-use tower rising roughly 480 meters across 103 floors.
The hotel will have 110 rooms and suites, a spa and wellness retreat, an indoor pool and gym, and several restaurants and bars. Marriott is positioning it as a "sanctuary within the city" rather than a conventional big-city luxury hotel, aiming to preserve the privacy and sense of place that define the Reserve brand's six existing properties, all of which sit in destinations like Thailand, Bali, and Mexico rather than downtown business districts.
Why it matters
When it opens, Shanghai will become the only city in the world where all eight of Marriott's luxury brands operate simultaneously — a distinction that says as much about Shanghai's pull on ultra-high-net-worth travelers as it does about Marriott's ambitions. Reserve's entire premise has been geographic scarcity: fewer than a dozen properties globally, each requiring real effort to reach. Putting one in a supertall tower in a global financial center tests whether that scarcity mindset can survive proximity to an airport and a subway line, or whether the brand's cachet was tied to remoteness all along.
