Amalfi Coast luxury hotels

Ravello clifftop quiet versus Positano and Amalfi waterfront density, with Belmond Caruso, Villa Margherita, and the coast's scarce-view houses.

The Amalfi Coast is a vertical problem: cliff towns, a two-lane road that becomes the bottleneck of the trip, lemon terraces, and hotels that sell the Tyrrhenian as a view you cannot easily swim to from the lobby. Ravello sits inland and up, which is why it is the quieter balcony. Positano and Amalfi sit on the water, which is why they take the day-tripper load. Choose altitude vs beach before you choose a brand.

Caruso is Ravello's clifftop palace, an 11th-century house with frescoes, gardens, and the infinity pool that has become the coast's luxury shorthand. Book it for views and atmosphere, not for stepping onto sand in a bathrobe. Villa Margherita is the two-suite private villa in Caruso's gardens, with chef and butler, for groups that need a house. Down the coast, houses like Le Sirenuse in Positano and Palazzo Avino in Ravello occupy the same scarce-view market without being Belmond. They are not interchangeable with Caruso. They are the reason you should still read more than one card below.

Drive time is not a footnote. A "quick lunch in Positano" from Ravello is a commitment, especially in July. Many guests are happier treating Caruso as the resort and taking one planned boat day rather than touring the whole coast by car each afternoon. If you need a beach club as a daily habit, look at properties on the water, or add a night on Capri, rather than fighting Ravello's geography.

Season: late April to early June and September to October are the months when the drive and the villages are still themselves. August is the coast at maximum density. Some hotels are seasonal. Confirm opening months. Our booking calendar and honeymoon guide both come back to this coast for a reason: it photographs perfectly and overcrowds on the same weekend.

If you are deciding between Amalfi and another Mediterranean Belmond, use the featured compares (Caruso vs La Residencia, Caruso vs Villa Margherita) rather than a spreadsheet of every cliff hotel. Belmond is the building. The coast is the constraint. Pick the constraint you actually want to live with for four nights.

Honeymoon demand is the other constraint. Caruso and the better Positano houses book out for September weekends far earlier than a midweek October stay. If the trip is a wedding guest room block, start with destination weddings and a planner who already knows the hotel's terrace rules; Ravello wind and heat in August are not theoretical. Independent travellers should still email the hotel with a room-view preference (coast vs garden) rather than trusting the booking-engine label. The view is the product. Getting it wrong is expensive.
