Mallorca
The largest Balearic island, split between the party south and the UNESCO-listed Tramuntana northwest — where artists' villages like Deià still set the tone for a quieter, mountain-and-sea stay.
Mallorca is two islands sharing a name. The south and Palma handle nightlife, cruise calls, and a lot of the island's hotel volume. The northwest, under the UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana, is villages, terraces, and a slower sea: Deià, Valldemossa, Sóller. Ultra-luxury bookings that go well almost always pick a side on purpose. Mixing both in a three-night stay wastes a transfer day on mountain roads.
La Residencia in Deià is the Tramuntana argument: twin historic manor houses, an artists' village, and a mountain-and-sea stay rather than a club-hotel. It is the property to book if you want to walk, swim, and eat in a village that still has a painters' reputation. Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor is a different geography, the Formentor peninsula, with a more classic resort footprint and Four Seasons operational breadth. Cap Rocat, in a former fortress, is the island's design-and-privacy play for travellers who want masonry and a private caseta more than a village square.
Season matters. July and August are hot, expensive, and busy even in Deià, which was never designed for coach traffic. May, June, and September are the months that match the northwest's walking-and-swimming brief. Winter is for travellers who like the Tramuntana empty and do not need a guaranteed beach day. Read timing before you staple Mallorca to a mid-August European grand tour.
Compared with the Amalfi Coast, Mallorca is less vertical, less famous-terrace, and easier to drive. Compared with Portofino, it is a full island, not a harbour village. If you are cross-shopping Belmond Mediterranean coast hotels, the featured compare between Caruso and La Residencia is the honest version of "Italy cliff vs Mallorca village." Use Compare for that pair rather than inventing a third.
Fly into Palma and budget the transfer as part of the stay, not an afterthought. Formentor and Deià are not interchangeable with a Palma city hotel. The cards below are the ultra-luxury shortlist we actually cover. Start with which coast you want to wake up on, then pick a hotel.
Dining follows the geography. Deià and Valldemossa are village restaurants and hotel kitchens, not a Palma tasting-menu crawl. If restaurant-hopping is half the trip, build a Palma night into the itinerary on purpose, or stay nearer the city and day-trip the mountains. La Residencia guests who treat the hotel as the dining room have a better week than guests who fight the roads every evening. For couples and honeymoon filters, see couples and honeymoon; Mallorca is a strong fit when privacy and walking matter more than a famous cliff pool.
