Great Rift Valley, Kenya

30 tented suites in two camps of 15

Great Rift Valley, Kenya

Angama Mara: Two glass-fronted camps on the Oloololo Escarpment — lock the family suite, the private vehicle, and what the rate actually includes.

Angama Mara sits on the Oloololo Escarpment a thousand feet above the Maasai Mara, on a 700-hectare site that borders the Mara Triangle with 1.2 kilometres of Rift Valley frontage. The name is from the Swahili for suspended in mid-air. Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens designed it; Annemarie Meintjes did the interiors. The house does not print an opening year. Two identical but completely separate camps hold 15 en-suite tented suites each — 30 in all. Suites span over 100 square metres including the deck, with 11-metre floor-to-ceiling glass. The house does not name the camps Camp One or Camp Two. One camp sits on the Out of Africa kopje.

Lock the family rules on night one. The lodge and rates pages welcome children of all ages year round. A 2022 house fact sheet still says children aged 6 and over only — confirm with camp before you fly with anyone under 6. Children 12 and under must share a triple unless you book an extra tented suite at the Family Stay rate. Each camp has two sets of two interconnected suites — eight across the property — sleeping up to two adults and four children per set, with an enclosed passageway. Families with children 0–6 must reserve a private safari vehicle when booking fewer than three tented suites. Complimentary childminding prints 18h00 to 22h00. Check-in is 12pm; check-out is 10am, with a change room for late departures. Patty’s Tent is the accessible suite: grab rails, ramps, and clear paths to the guest area and vehicle drop-off.

Dining has no clock hours. The food page is à la carte, no buffet, with settings in the Guest Area, Pavilion, Library, baraza, tent deck, lantern-lit forest, Shamba, Sundowner Boma, and the Out of Africa kopje. Forest BBQ is a few minutes’ drive from the lodge. Out of Africa Picnic is for two, maximum four, with a guide. A stand-alone kosher kitchen plates for up to 12. Spa treatments run throughout the day in the tent or on the deck — no spa building hours. The hub prints a 12-metre rim-flow pool and a Technogym fitness room. Kenya is classified as a malaria area.

The tented-suites card prints what the rate includes: guided safaris into the Mara Triangle, guided walking safaris on the escarpment, all meals and drinks, laundry, WiFi, on-property guest experiences, and child-minding. Extra: park fees, the Angama Foundation contribution, French Champagne and reserve wines, community visits, hot-air balloon safaris, gratuities, Safari Shop purchases, and in-tent massages. Transfer is a short 45-minute flight from Nairobi — scheduled from Wilson or charter from Jomo Kenyatta. The lodge page names Angama’s airfield and a 10-minute private road to the reserve entrance. The rates page includes transfers to and from Kichwa Tembo Airstrip. Confirm which strip you land on. Book Angama if you want the glass view, Triangle access, and a full-board tent. Skip it if you wanted a classic fly-camp without glass, if you will not book the private vehicle for under-sixes on a small booking, or if you expected restaurant hours and a second dining room. Google is 4.7 from 336 reviews. Tripadvisor is 4.9 from 384.

First day

  1. Confirm which of the two identical camps you are in and whether you have an interconnect or Patty’s Tent.
  2. If children are 12 and under, lock the triple or the second suite. If anyone is 0–6 on fewer than three tents, lock the private vehicle. Confirm under-sixes with camp — a 2022 fact sheet still says 6 and over only.
  3. Check-in is 12pm. Plan the Nairobi flight. Confirm whether you land at Angama’s airfield or Kichwa Tembo — the lodge and rates pages disagree.
  4. Ask camp which table you have tonight — Guest Area, Shamba, Forest BBQ, or the kopje. Hours are not printed.

Guests Love

  • The view from the glass

Guests repeat the same image: sunrise on the suite deck, savannah in the shower, the plain a thousand feet down. That is why the 4.9 Tripadvisor score exists.

  • Guides and the Triangle

Reviews name guides and talk about leopard, lion and the density of the Mara Triangle. The driving is the other half of the product.

  • Food that is not an afterthought

Shamba lunches, deck breakfasts and a kitchen people mention by name — unusual for a 30-suite camp.

Guests Warn

  • Not a traditional tented camp

The Italian-glass design puts off safari purists who wanted canvas and hurricane lamps. Reviewers who bounce say so clearly.

  • One dining room, and the odd smoky night

There is no second restaurant to escape to. A few reviews mention smoke at dinner and uneven service with groups.

  • The migration is below you, not on the lawn

You still drive down. Crossings are weather and herd, not a scheduled show. Do not book two nights and call it a crossing itinerary.

The overall score is a review-count-weighted average of named public platforms, normalized to /10. • Check-in 12pm, check-out 10am. Childminding 18h00–22h00.

  • Hot-air balloon: no children under 8, minimum height 1.2 metres, no expectant mothers. Wake-up 04h30.

Editor's Note

Family suites are two linked tents for two adults and four children. Patty’s Tent is the accessible key. The lodge welcomes children of all ages; a 2022 fact sheet still says 6 and over. Confirm the airstrip — Angama’s own versus Kichwa Tembo. Massages are extra and happen in the tent.
