Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge: Twenty-five tents on Clayoquot Sound — lock a Thursday or Sunday arrival, the 6+ age line and whether your bathroom sits inside the canvas.

Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge occupies 600 acres at the Bedwell River in Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island, with 25 canvas safari tents and an opening year of 2000. The five categories run from rainforest and waterfront Deluxe tents with private bathrooms a few steps outside to Ensuite tents with bathrooms inside and a two-tent Hillside Family layout. There is no swimming pool, no cell service and no guest-pet policy: pets are not allowed because of wildlife. Wi-Fi is complimentary but may be slow or intermittent. The lodge operates only from May 21 to September 27, 2026, with peak season from June 18 to September 6. It suits guests who want scheduled wilderness days, canvas and communal lodge life rather than the flexibility of a conventional resort.

Lock logistics before anything else. Arrivals and departures are Sundays and Thursdays only: standard patterns are three nights Thursday–Sunday, four nights Sunday–Thursday and seven nights beginning Thursday or Sunday, while the packages page also offers 10-night stays on those arrival days. Transfers cost extra. The shared seaplane leaves Richmond after a 2pm check-in for a 3pm departure and takes 45–60 minutes; the shared boat leaves Tofino after a 2.45pm check-in for a 3pm departure. House guidance gives the boat crossing as both 35 and 45 minutes. The homepage calls the lodge accessible only by seaplane, but destination guidance also offers the boat and permits privately arranged helicopter arrivals. Land at YVR or Tofino Airport by noon, and keep seaplane baggage to 40lb / 18kg per guest in soft-sided bags where possible. Complete the compulsory waiver sent 14 days before arrival.

The minimum lodge age is six. Horseback riding begins at 12, and riders under 18 need a parent or guardian. Every Deluxe places its private bathroom separately, just steps outside, while the Ensuite categories place the main bathroom inside and add an outdoor cedar-clad shower. Waterfront Deluxe carries unresolved house sizing: its individual card gives 42 square metres, while the current Lodge Guide gives 48 square metres / 517 square feet. A standard Deluxe or Ensuite holds no more than three adults or two adults with two children; Hillside Family is ideal for four in existing bedding, while FAQ and packages publish a maximum of eight.

Reserve preferred dining times and Healing Grounds treatments when the stay is confirmed. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and selected drinks are included, while vintage and cellarmaster wines are extra. There is no meal room service because food must be secured from wildlife, although one itinerary advertises hot coffee at the tent door. Share dietary needs at reservation: the kitchen cannot prepare meals requiring strict religious observance. Meal clocks conflict. Current itineraries give breakfast as 6.30–9.30am and dinner as 6–9pm; the Digital Compendium gives breakfast as 7am–9am and dinner from 6pm until late. Staff gratuities are described as included, while packages and the Lodge Guide also apply a mandatory pre-tax service charge.

Healing Grounds is for in-house guests only. Treatments are extra unless a package includes one; scheduled plunge and stretch sessions, sauna, hot tubs and gym are included. Treatment hours are not published. Gym hours are 6am–11pm and sauna hours 6.30am–10pm. Wellbeing materials describe three treatment rooms plus a waterfront massage tent, while the lodge page describes two plus the tent. Hot-tub guidance also conflicts: the FAQ says spas may be used 24/7, while the Digital Compendium says hot tubs close at 10pm. Book Clayoquot if fixed arrival days, a six-plus family policy and a weather-led programme sound like the point. Skip it if you need spontaneous dates, pets, cell coverage, a pool, meal room service, guaranteed late hot-tub access or strict religious meal preparation. Tripadvisor is 4.8 from 179 reviews; Google is 4.7 from 49.

Guests Love

  • Place-led stay

The Sound, guided programme and canvas setting define the trip more than conventional resort facilities.

  • Inclusive rhythm

Meals, selected drinks and shared scheduled experiences keep most of the core stay together.

  • Room distinctions

Deluxe, Ensuite and Hillside Family layouts answer different bathroom and family needs.

Guests Warn

  • Fixed logistics

Seasonal operation, two movement days and an 18kg seaplane allowance require advance planning.

  • Remote limits

No cell service, pool, pets or meal room service will be decisive for some guests.

Editor's Note

Choose an Ensuite if stepping outside to the bathroom would interrupt the night, and build the trip around a Thursday or Sunday transfer. Families should check the six-and-over rule before booking; riders must be 12 or older. Reserve dining and Healing Grounds early, share dietary needs with the reservation, and confirm the lodge’s conflicting hot-tub, meal-time and boat-duration guidance.
