Gora Kadan: A former imperial-villa ryokan in Gora with private-source onsen and seasonal kaiseki.

Gora Kadan occupies the former Kan’in-no-miya summer-villa grounds in Gora, Hakone. It is a ryokan whose meaningful distinctions are room bathing, tatami/futon versus bed configuration, and the way dinner is served—not a hotel where every room is interchangeable. The house’s 23 official room cards range from 47 m² Suzukake to the 254 m² Bettei Suite Shinonome, all with 15:00 check-in and 11:00 check-out, and all listed as non-smoking with Wi-Fi, 4K TV and Bluetooth speaker.

Choose according to the bath and meal setting. Standard Types A–D have indoor wooden baths; the open-air and Kadan-suite categories add stone, wooden or Jacuzzi bathing, while some add steam sauna. Shinonome is the largest: 254 m² for one to six guests, with a private dry sauna, cold bath, stone hot-spring bath, tea room and chef’s kitchen. Room capacity varies widely—from one or two in Akebono, Zangetsu, Meigetsu, Senshin and Suzukake to up to six in Shinonome, Akatsuki and Kakou—so do not infer a family fit from the word suite. Only Meigetsu and Senshin explicitly take dinner and breakfast at Kaiseki Kadan rather than in the room.

Arrange meal needs before arrival. Every room card describes monthly seasonal kaiseki dinner and Japanese or Western breakfast; the house needs dietary restrictions or changes by 18:00 on the day before arrival, and same-day menu changes are unavailable. The final dinner start is 19:00, so alert the house before then if you will arrive late. Shabu-shabu, sukiyaki and wagyu kaiseki are published as options for stays of two nights or more. Kaiseki Kadan’s visitor hours are lunch 11:00–15:00 (last order 13:30) and dinner 17:30–21:00 (last order 19:00), while staying guests on its plans do not need to reserve.

Sushi Kadan needs its own booking: it is closed Monday and Wednesday, has one 18:00 seating and eight seats. Lounge Hanakage is open 08:00–23:00 (last order 22:30), with bar service after 20:00. The bath rules are equally worth knowing: public onsen runs 15:00 until 11:00 next morning and switches sex-separated sides at 03:00; exposed tattoos must be covered, bathing suits/rash guards are not allowed, and children must be toilet trained. The private open-air bath is included for 40 minutes, but must be reserved from the published start-time schedule.

Book Gora Kadan for a detailed, room-led Hakone ryokan stay with serious bathing and kaiseki. Skip it if you require a blanket accessibility guarantee, a fixed western-hotel service pattern, casual late dinner, or a property where a room title tells you all the practical distinctions. Retained traveler aggregates are strong, but the right room, dietary lead time and Sushi Kadan reservation will matter more to the experience than a generic luxury-room upgrade.

First day

  1. Confirm the exact bedding, capacity and bath type for your named room, then reserve a private open-air bath slot from the published schedule.
  2. Give dietary restrictions by 18:00 the day before arrival and plan to start dinner by 19:00; late arrival needs advance notice.
  3. Reserve Sushi Kadan separately if wanted—its only seating is 18:00, it is closed Monday/Wednesday and has eight seats.

Guests Love

  • Ryokan detail

Retained traveler evidence values the sense of place: gardens, traditional room formats and bathing rather than a standardized hotel room.

  • Kaiseki and service

Retained traveler evidence repeatedly treats the seasonal food and careful service as central to the stay.

Guests Warn

  • Category complexity

The house’s extensive category list makes it important to compare capacity, beds, private bath and dining location before booking.

  • Formal rhythm

Meal lead times, public-bath rules and a fixed Sushi Kadan seating suit planned stays more than spontaneous late-night hotel use.

The overall score is a review-count-weighted average of named public platforms, normalized to /10. Category scores — including cleanliness and location — are Hotel Flock editorial readings of those reviews, not a platform's private formula.
