Songtei Kyoto Brings Shangri-La Signatures Opposite Nijo Castle for Late 2026

Shangri-La Group will open 77-key Songtei Kyoto as its second Shangri-La Signatures hotel, opposite UNESCO-listed Nijo Castle, in late 2026.

Shangri-La Group has named its second Shangri-La Signatures hotel: Songtei Kyoto, a 77-key property opposite UNESCO-listed Nijo Castle in Kyoto. First guests are expected from late 2026, with remaining facilities opening through a full unveiling in early 2027.

Songtei Kyoto sits on the former residence of the Kyoto Shoshidai, a historically charged site. Rooms and suites are designed to frame views of Nijo Castle's Kita Ote-mon, the gardens, and the surrounding landscape. The name pairs "Song" (pine), a symbol of longevity, with "Tei," an invitation to feel at home. Wellness plans include a private spa, indoor and outdoor hot baths, an indoor pool, and a gym. Dining will span an all-day lounge, Chinese fine dining, a kappo-sushi counter, and an evening bar.

Shangri-La Signatures launched with The Silk Lakehouse, Shangri-La Hangzhou, on West Lake. That first address earned TIME World's Greatest Places 2026 recognition and a Prix Versailles World's Most Beautiful Hotels 2026 selection. Songtei Kyoto is the collection's first Japan hotel and a clear bid to compete in Kyoto's crowded ultra-luxury tier.

How Songtei compares inside Kyoto's luxury set

Kyoto already offers deep inventory for travellers who want quiet, design-led stays: Aman Kyoto, Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto, The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto, Park Hyatt Kyoto, Capella Kyoto, and Six Senses Kyoto. A 77-key Shangri-La Signatures address opposite Nijo Castle adds another small-footprint option with Asian hosting as the stated differentiator, rather than a Western palace or ryokan revival narrative.

Location is the practical so-what. Guests who want morning walks toward the castle walls and a central base for temple days get a hotel that leans into that geography instead of hiding in the hills. The phased opening also matters: late 2026 may mean rooms before every restaurant and spa station is live, so early bookers should confirm what is actually operating for their dates.

What is still unknown

Shangri-La has not yet released room categories, rates, or a public reservation calendar. Culinary concepts beyond the broad program outline are still to come. For now, the confirmed facts are the 77-key count, the Nijo Castle site, the Signatures positioning, and the late-2026 soft start toward an early-2027 full debut.

Travellers building a 2026 or 2027 Kyoto itinerary should watch for booking windows if they want a Shangri-La loyalty stay in the city. Until then, Songtei Kyoto is the clearest signal that Shangri-La intends Signatures to be a real multi-city ultra-luxury line, not a one-off Hangzhou experiment.
