Dunton Hot Springs: An 1880s San Juan ghost town — geothermal cabins, a saloon table, Two Michelin Keys.

Dunton Hot Springs is a restored late-nineteenth-century mining town in a secluded San Juan Mountains valley near Rico, Colorado. Its 14 individually restored cabins sit around the Saloon and Dance Hall, close to the Bathhouse and geothermal soaking. This is not a conventional resort of interchangeable rooms: each cabin has its own bed plan and character, while the house does not publish cabin floor areas, maximum occupancies or adapted-access specifications.

Choose the cabin before arranging the rest of the trip. Well House is the only cabin with a year-round private indoor hot spring and cold plunge; Dunton Store’s private outdoor spring is summer-only. Bjoerkmans, Dunton Store and Geysir are the only cabins explicitly described as pet-friendly, each with prior telephone approval. Larger parties should compare the published multi-room layouts of Chuck’s, Potter House, Vertical Log, Tipping, Dunton Store and New House, then ask Dunton to confirm actual guest capacity.

The overnight format is unusually inclusive. Cabin rates include meals and standard alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, excluding the Reserve List. Breakfast is cooked to order in the Saloon from 8:00–10:00 and lunch is served there daily at 13:00; dinner setting and menu vary with the stay. Share dietary requirements before arrival, reserve the private dining room through Guest Services if needed, and do not assume in-cabin dining or a minibar—the public material does not publish either.

Treat the road, altitude and water as first-day planning, not background details. The resort is 21 miles from Highway 145, with the final eight miles unpaved; private transfer can be arranged. The Bathhouse is always available to guests and has two reservable private slots daily, but published clock times and slot lengths are absent. Spa treatments require advance scheduling, spa service is unavailable under 13, ages 13–17 require written guardian consent, and yoga begins at 16. Activity ages and conditions vary significantly by excursion.

Book Dunton for an intimate, all-meals-included mountain stay where cabin identity, mineral soaking and guided outdoor time matter more than a conventional pool-and-spa timetable. Skip it if dependable mobile service, a published step-free route, a fixed restaurant menu, guaranteed room service or an effortless paved arrival is essential. Independent traveler ratings remain score context only; the cabin card and Guest Services confirmation should control the practical booking decision.

First day

  1. Confirm the transfer or final-road plan: the last eight miles after the Highway 145 turn are unpaved.
  2. Confirm cabin layout, bed setup, pet approval and whether any private spring is year-round or summer-only.
  3. Set breakfast in the Saloon, then give dietary requests and arrange a private-dining or picnic plan if needed.
  4. Reserve spa care and a Bathhouse private slot; under-13s cannot receive spa services and ages 13–17 need written guardian consent.
  5. Review activity age limits, weather conditions and the current Guest Services schedule for complimentary programmes.

Guests Love

  • Distinctive setting and soaking

Traveler-review context consistently centres on the restored town, mountain valley and geothermal-water experience.

  • Personal food and service rhythm

The inclusive meal programme and small-property service model are recurring strengths in available traveler commentary.

Guests Warn

  • Remote logistics

The approach, altitude and limited cell service make advance coordination materially more important than at a conventional resort.

  • Not a standardized hotel

Cabin layouts and facilities vary by name, so a strong property score should not replace confirmation of the selected cabin.

The overall score is a review-count-weighted average of named public platforms, normalized to /10. Category scores — including cleanliness and location — are Hotel Flock editorial readings of those reviews, not a platform's private formula. Hotel Flock is not affiliated with Tripadvisor, Booking.com, Trivago, or any other review site.

Come for 14 cabins, a bathhouse, and a saloon table in the rate. Name Well House if you want a private spring. Do not come for a paved drive or a large spa.
