Songtei Kyoto Puts Shangri-La Signatures Opposite Nijo Castle

Shangri-La's second Signatures hotel will open 77 keys beside Kyoto's UNESCO castle from late 2026, with a full unveiling planned for early 2027.

Shangri-La has named its second Shangri-La Signatures hotel: Songtei Kyoto, a 77-key retreat set opposite Kyoto's Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Soft openings begin in late 2026, with remaining facilities rolling out ahead of a full unveil in early 2027.

Signatures is Shangri-La's ultra-luxury, residential-style collection. Its first address, The Silk Lakehouse on West Lake in Hangzhou, opened to strong early acclaim, including a place on TIME's World's Greatest Places 2026 and a Prix Versailles nod. Kyoto is the brand's next statement: fewer keys, deeper place, and hosting pitched as personal rather than programmed.

Why Nijo Castle matters for the stay

The site sits on land once tied to the Kyoto Shoshidai, a historic administrative residence. Rooms and suites are being designed to frame views of Nijo Castle's Kita Ote-mon (Great North Gate), its gardens, and the surrounding cityscape. For guests who already book Aman Kyoto or Capella Kyoto for quiet garden luxury, Songtei adds a castle-facing alternative under a different Asian hosting culture.

The name blends "Song" (pine, longevity and good fortune) with "Tei" (an invitation to feel at home). Shangri-La is leaning hard into Kyoto's Edo-period residential mood: ceremonial elegance, curated art and storytelling, and wellness that stays on property rather than shipping guests out for every ritual.

What is planned inside

Beyond the 77 rooms and suites, Songtei Kyoto is set to include a private spa, indoor and outdoor hot baths, an indoor pool, and a gym. Dining plans span an all-day lounge, a Chinese fine-dining restaurant, a kappo-sushi counter, and an intimate evening bar. Select outlets will open before the full property debut, so early bookers should confirm which restaurants and baths are live on their dates.

Reservation details and room categories are still forthcoming. Guests planning Tokyo plus Kyoto itineraries can already pair this announcement with existing Shangri-La inventory such as Shangri-La Tokyo, then watch for Songtei's booking window later this year.

For travelers who want Kyoto with fewer keys and a clearer view of a UNESCO landmark from the property itself, Songtei Kyoto is the Shangri-La news to track through winter into early 2027.
